Preliminary plans include a first event in 2006, possibly in May but the date has not yet been confirmed. It is expected that the event will become a regular bi-annual event, rotating with a Historic Homes & Gardens Walk to be held on the off year. “May is Polish-American Heritage Month and Museum Day is in May,” noted Cynthia Fredricks, Chair, Community Relations Committee. “ North Tonawanda 's rich immigrant heritage of the 19 th and early 20 th centuries includes Polish, German, Italian, Irish, Hungarian, Ukranian, Lebanese, and other ethnic groups. In recent years, a significant number of individuals and families of Latin American and Russian heritage have settled in North Tonawanda .” Ethnic foods, music and other entertainment, and merchandise with an ethnic flavor will be offered. Booth or table space will be made available to participating groups or individuals at a fee, with participants retaining the proceeds from their sales. Location and date will be announced in the near future. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 16. An update on Museum programs and activities will be presented. Many opportunities for volunteer service will be explained at the meeting as well. Following the meeting, those interested may join the Board of Trustees in a visit to the Museum's new administrative office facility at 314 Oliver Street . Neal, a North Tonawanda resident, has served as Acting Director since formation of the original steering committee for the new museum in September 2003. John Borycki, a Tonawanda resident and North Tonawanda native, is Collections Curator. Borycki had served as Acting Curator since October 2003. Sarah Walter, a North Tonawanda resident, is Education Curator. Tim Gerwitz, a North Tonawanda resident, is Webmaster. Gerwitz owns and operates AdviceCreative, an advertising agency. Bernie Rotella, a resident of Sanborn, is Grantwriter. Rotella is a grantwriter and business planning specialist. The Museum is presently setting up its new administrative office, cataloguing, and storage facilities at 314 Oliver Street . The mailing address continues at 195 Goundry Street . In the near future, a schedule of hours will be announced so that donors may bring in their memorabilia of North Tonawanda 's history for the Museum's collections. Neal has assembled a volunteer clerical staff. Borycki has a volunteer house & grounds staff assisting in initial setup requirements. The North Tonawanda History Museum 's September 16 th Membership Meeting will be held in the Administrative Board Room at DeGraff Memorial Hospital , beginning at 6:30 p.m. Following the meeting, attendees may join Trustees and staff in a visit to 314 Oliver Street . The use of the Oliver Street facilities is being donated by North Tonawanda resident and businessman, David Zobrist, owner of Awnings Plus. The building was built in 1906 as the original Adams Bakery. The Adams logo appears in the brick façade of the building. Adams Bakery, along with McCarthy's Market, Chester 's Meat Market, and other Oliver Street businesses, served the early 20 th century lumber workers and employees of other manufacturing operations of the time and their families. |
