COUNTY LEGISLATORS NEEDLER AND DAVIGNON, MAYOR BURGIO, SENATOR MAZIARZ, CITY ATTORNEY HENRY WOJTASZEK DONATE SAVNGS BONDS FOR FOUR NORTH TONAWANDA STUDENT CONTEST WINNERS; TO BE HONORED DURING CANAL FEST

The North Tonawanda History Museum's logo design contest panel of judges selected four winners at a reviewing session in the DeGraff Hospital Community Center at 139 Division Street on Tuesday, June 15.

Winners are: Tiffany Pichette , a 3 rd grade student at Spruce School; Ray Torres , a 4 th grade student at Spruce School; both students of art teacher Nicole McCumber; Audrey Marshall , a 5 th grade student at Ohio School, a student of art teacher Mary Ellen Holler; and Allegra Schmidt , an 8 th grade student at Reszel Middle School, a student of art teacher Melinda Wright. The winning artworks were selected from 79 entries. Art students participated from all North Tonawanda School District Elementary Schools, Reszel Middle School, Lowry Middle School, and St. Mark's Lutheran School.

Each winner will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond, to be presented as part of Canal Fest ceremonies on Wednesday, July 21, at 4:30 p.m. in the bandstand in Gateway Park on Sweeney Street. The winners will be also included in the North Tonawanda History Museum parade float in the Canal Fest parade as well on Tuesday, July 20. The students and their winning artwork, framed by Partners in Art, will be given a ride in a convertible, courtesy of Skill Buick, following the Museum's parade float. The winning entries will be on display in the future at Partners in Art.

The Savings Bonds were purchased with donations from Senator George D. Maziarz, Mayor David J. Burgio, and Niagara County Legislators William M. Davignon and Malcolm Needler and City Attorney Henry Wojtaszek.

While the winning designs may not actually be used in their submitted form, the ideas generated by all 79 entries will be incorporated into the eventual creation of a permanent logo for the Museum. Cynthia Fredricks, Community Relations Chair, noted, "Our panel of judges included professional artists, educators, and historians. We would have loved to have been able to award many more prizes because there were so many wonderful entries. We look forward to making them available for the community to enjoy."

The Museum's parade float is a joint project of two North Tonawanda youth groups, the Niagara County Junior Girl Scout Troop 148 which meets at Drake School , under the direction of Helen Getz, and the St. Joseph 's Church Youth Group, under the direction of Theresa Smith. The kids and their leaders have worked for months with museum representatives, researching North Tonawanda history, conceiving their plans, gathering materials, and creating the float.

"The kids in NT have been enthusiastic about our new museum from the beginning," said Donna Zellner Neal, Acting Director. "We are delighted with their enthusiasm and energy and their discovering that local history is "fun stuff."

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PAINTING, GENERAL CLEAN UP

"We are now in a position to utilize volunteers for general clean up, painting, and light maintenance functions. We also need people to assist with moving display cabinets and other heavy furniture from our present storage locations to the new site. Individuals with pick up trucks or vans willing to help with this transfer of items would also be appreciated."
