TWO NT MUSEUMS JOIN FORCES TO HOST SEAWAY TRAIL WALKS

The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum and the North Tonawanda History Museum are co-hosting sixteen (16) weeks of Seaway Trail Walks in North Tonawanda this summer.

The walks will begin at 5 p.m. on Wednesdays from June 16 through September 29. All walks will begin and end at the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum at 180 Thompson Street , North Tonawanda . Fees to participate in a walk are $8 per person, $4 for children under 12, and $6 per person in groups of more than 15. Each walk will be approximately 1-1/2 hours in length.

Coordinating plans for the Walks are Rae Proefrock and Elizabeth-Brick Schutt for the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum , and John Borycki and Donna Zellner Neal for the North Tonawanda History Museum . North Tonawanda City Historian A. Daniel Bille has been serving as a consultant in the planning of the Walks.

The Seaway Trail, a National Scenic Byway, is the longest National Recreation Trail in the country. It runs for 454 miles from the Pennsylvania border north along Lake Erie , the Niagara River , and Lake Ontario to Massena and the St. Lawrence Seaway . Historic sites, scenic overlooks, and natural wonders can be found along its length.

In 2004, volunteers in eight communities will be “telling the stories” of their home towns as part of Seaway Trail Walks. The eight communities are Erie , Pennsylvania , and Westfield , North Tonawanda , Lewiston , Sackets Harbor , Clayton, Alexandria Bay , and Waddington in New York.

Individuals interested in serving as walk leaders, or those wishing to register for the walks in advance are invited to call the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum at 693-1885 or e-mail at curator@carouselmuseum.org or the North Tonawanda History Museum at 213-0554, e-mail at nthistorymuseum@aol.com for additional information.
