Hosted by the North Tonawanda History Museum . Walking tours of historic North Tonawanda , a city whose location at the juncture of the historic Erie Canal with the mighty Niagara River made it a significant industrial center in the 19 th and early 20 th centuries. Learn about the rich immigrant heritage of “the Lumber Capital of the World,” and see the homes of the lumber barons and other prominent individuals in the city's history. Two rotating walking tours: North Tonawanda 's Industrial Heritage: June 8, 22; July 6, 20; August 3, 17, 31; September 14, 28. North Tonawanda's Historic Homes: June 15, 29; July 13, 27; August 10, 24, September 7, 21, Tours begin and end in the parking lot of the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum (admission extra, open 1 to 5 p.m. daily) or visit the historic downtown North Tonawanda shopping district, a unique eclectic mix of shops, restaurants, and cultural venues. Plan to stay after the walking tour for a free concert in Gateway Park on the banks of the historic Erie Canal . Known as the “Lumber Capital of the World” in the late 19 th century. 2005 Office Hours: Mondays 5 to 9 p.m. , Tuesdays 1 to 9 p.m. , Thursdays 9 to 5 p.m. , Fridays 9 to noon Also open by appointment For Immediate Release NT History Museum announces coming meetings Thursday, January 20, 2005 – Monthly Membership Meeting (OPEN TO PUBLIC) In lieu of a program because of potential poor weather conditions the North Tonawanda History Museum 's monthly meeting for January will be a planning session at Museum offices at 314 Oliver Street . Members, volunteers, and others interested in knowing more about the Museum's work are invited to attend. The Museum will be open during its regular hours from 9 to 5 p.m. that day and the membership/planning session will be from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. You do not need to be present for the entire time. “We invite you to come meet with the Trustees and volunteer staff for an update on our progress and plans for 2005,” said Cynthia Fredricks, President. “We have an ambitious schedule of events and activities lined up for the coming year. Your input is needed and we can find a use for your time in whatever quantities or dates you have available.” The “North Tonawanda Ethnic Heritage Cookbook” will be available for purchase at the meeting, as well as embroidered winter scarves, embroidered totebags, souvenir mugs, CD's of Erie Canal music and New York State folk music, historic postcards of North Tonawanda, and tickets to the July 31 “Historic Treasures Tour” of ten historic homes, five historic churches, and three other historic sites in North Tonawanda. Entry forms will also be available for those seeking to enter the Historic Gardens Contest and “The Future of our Past” Logo Design Contest. Reservations will also be taken for the May 21 day trip by bus to the Niagara County Historical Society, which includes a luncheon buffet at Pane's Restaurant. Thursday, February 17, 2005 – Monthly Membership Meeting (OPEN TO PUBLIC) A special meeting at the NT Football Hall of Fame, 240-1/2 Goundry Street , beginning at 6:30 p.m. Come visit this unique repository of North Tonawanda 's football history. Hall of Fame representatives will lead attendees on a tour of the facility. Refreshments will be provided. Thursday, March 17, 2005 – Monthly Membership Meeting (OPEN TO PUBLIC) Irish Heritage night will feature a program by Daniel Killian, former North Tonawanda Public Library Director, “Old Irish History: How the Irish Saved Civilization.” The meeting will be held in the DeGraff Community Center , 139 Division Street, North Tonawanda , beginning at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be provided. Thursday, April 21, 2005 – Monthly Membership Meeting (OPEN TO PUBLIC) The Museum's Annual Birthday Celebration for North Tonawanda will celebrate the 140 th anniversary of North Tonawanda's incorporation as a village, the first anniversary of the North Tonawanda History Museum (which was granted its Provisional Charter April 20, 2004), and the 125 th anniversary of the Tonawanda News. Refreshments will be provided by Barb's Sweet Treats, with birthday cakes by Budwey's Bakery. May 21 , 2005 - Day Trip To Niagara County Historical Society As part of its educational programming and in keeping with its efforts to collaborate with other historical and cultural venues, the North Tonawanda History Museum 's Community Relations Committee is planning a day trip to the Niagara County Historical Society campus of five historic buildings in Lockport on Saturday, May 21, 2005 . Stephen Ash and Judith Mittiga are planning the trip. The day will begin with a bus trip, picking up passengers at the Museum offices at 314 Oliver Street , at 9:30 a.m. Following a guided tour of the historical society structures and a visit to the Outwater Emporium gift shop, the group will return to North Tonawanda for a luncheon at Pane's Restaurant at 1:15 p.m. The bus will return passengers to 314 Oliver following the luncheon. Mittiga was named to the Board of Trustees of the North Tonawanda History Museum . Mrs. Mittiga, a North Tonawanda resident, is an operations assistant with HSBC Bank USA . She has been an active member of the Museum's Community Relations Committee and is chair of the Lumber City Scavenger Hunt Committee. In other Board business, Michael Mroczka, also a North Tonawanda resident, was named to the Advisory Committee. Mroczka had previously served as a member of the Board of Trustees. He is a RealtyUSA agent and a self-employed wedding photographer. He was a long-time employee of Lawless Brothers, serving as an accountant. Donna Zellner Neal was re-appointed volunteer Director, Sarah E. Walter was appointed volunteer Curator; John Zellner Neal was re-appointed volunteer Staff & Technological Assistant; and Tim Gerwitz was re-appointed Webmaster. Members of the community with photos of buildings, street scenes, businesses, and other sites in the city are invited to loan them to the Museum for scanning for use in the book. Contributors will be acknowledged in the book. Personal information on the families or individuals contributing the photos may also be submitted for consideration for inclusion in the book. The book will be “North Tonawanda Historic Sites & Treasures – Then & Now” and will cover the period 1865 – 1985. Photos may be hand-delivered, mailed, or e-mailed to the Museum at 314 Oliver Street , North Tonawanda , NY 14120 .
