The lumber hooker L. L. Barth was one of many that towed schooner barges, also laden with lumber, from the Great Lakes down the Niagara River to the harbor of the Tonawandas. In 1890, more lumber was unloaded at the port of the Tonawandas than anywhere else in the world--753,672,000 board feet!

Goundry Street flourished in an era when lumber ruled supreme in the Tonawandas. Note the brick road, which remains under the present pavement. Four of the wonderful historic homes on this street are part of the North Tonawanda History Museum's Historic Treasures Tour on July 31, 2005.

The Soemann family are enthusiastic supporters of the Tonawandas and Jay's parents, George and Marilyn Soemann were made Charter Honorary Life Members of the Museum for their support in our startup phase.
