This red brick building was built in 1895 as a Buffalo-Niagara Electric Railway Powerhouse. Prior to that, lumber piles and storage sheds for several saw mills and shingle makers occupied the site, with the main businesses being located on the banks of the Erie Canal across Sweeney Street from the building.
Herschell-Spillman Co., manufacturer of carrousels, occupied the red brick building in the early 1900's. The various Rand entities occupied the facility for many decades afterwards.
