Photographed in the late 1930's from the roof of the Post Office building, the northwest corner of Goundry and Oliver Streets was truly the Home of the Carrousel. Begun in the late 1800's as the Armitage-Herschell brass and iron foundry, the company introduced carousel production in the early 1900's. Through the years, carousels were manufactured by a number of separate companies, including Allan Herschell Company, Herschell Carrousel, Herschell-Spillman Company, and Spillman Engineering. In the photo above, at the front left corner, a corner window is visible. In this window a hand-carved merry-go-round horse was always on display. The Chance Amusement Company purchased the business in the early 1960's and moved the manufacturing to Kansas. The round house compound on Thompson STreet near Vandervoort where the merry-go-round units were assembled, now houses the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum. |
