Historic Photos of Oliver Street Gallery

McCarthy's Market, 204 - 206 Oliver Street, between Goundry and Thompson Streets, was known throughout the Tonawandas for more than 75 years for its wide selection of the finest fresh fruits and vegetables. In the photo, the original proprietors, Lucia and William McCarthy, tend the store in the early 1900's. In more recent times, their sons, William, Jr., and Thomas, expanded the business and specialized in gift baskets of select fruit. The market closed in 1981.

204-206 Oliver Street - McCarthy's Market was in business from 1905 - 1981.

Paschen's Dry Goods and Millinery Store was located at the south west corner of Oliver and Schenck Streets. In this photo, a Waterstrat Awning Works truck is in front of the store, with the newly-installed Waterstrat striped canvas awning over the store's display windows. Waterstrat was located at 51 Young Street in Tonawanda. This photo was taken in the 1920's. Oliver and Schenck Street were paved with brick. Paschen's store was well known throughout both Tonawandas for the first 30 years of the 1900's. The store sold women's apparel, hats, baby clothes, curtains, draperies, and a wide selection of yard goods.

The Avondale Theatre was located at the south west corner of Oliver Street at Robinson Street.
