Lauren George Hollister counted it an honor to serve his country and never complained about the hardships in training and on the battlefield.  His only complaint was in Austria after the war about the delays in sending the troops home.

Lauren George Holliste was a faithful communicator with his family and the family has provided the Museum with some of his written communication from World War II.  He mentioned the infamous OHRDRUF prison camp near Gotha, Germany, in one of his letters, the first camp to be discovered by American military.  He enlisted November 17, 1942, at the age of 22, and was discharged Marcj 14. 1946, at the age of 25-1/2.

During his military service, he was award an array of medals:  Sharp-Shooter Badge, Expert Rifle Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, Rhineland Battle Star, Central Europe Battle Star, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross.
