G.C. Murphy Variety Store
The G. C. Murphy Variety Store on Webster Street is shown in a 1930 era photo. The building was erected in 1888. The windows of the 5 and 10 cent store advertised school supplies. A notebook could be purchased for a nickel. Flannel sold for 10 cents a yard. Blankets cost $1 each. Signs in the second floor windows also advertised items, such as kitchen tools for 10 cents, maps for 25 cents, and rag rugs ranging from 39 cents to 79 cents. In the center, a hitching post is visible. At the right in front of the store is a scale where one could insert a penny and get their weight and fortune. |
