Proclamation issued April 1, 2005, by Mayor David J. Burgio, to pay tribute to Edward Kociolowicz, Frank Najuch, Chester Samborski, and Paul Szczepaniec, the four remaining members of the First-Last Man's Club. The proclamation was presented at the group's final dinner on April 2, 2005, with the Mayor declaring it "First-Last Man's Club Day." The club began in 1946 shortly after the conclusion of World War II. A group of young men got together and formed a social club and called it the Third Warders Social Club. They had it chartered by the State of New York. They had small club rooms at the corner of Oliver Street and 14th Avenue, which, prior to their occupancy had been Charles Malis' shoe repair parlor. In 1954, the built new club rooms at 147-12th Avenue, in which they held their first dinner in 1955. A gym was added to the original building in 1964. In 1948, talk began about forming a Last Man's Club with 50 members of the Third Warders Social Club, with no additional members added to the roster until the last two remained. In March 1948, they held their first dinner, continuing annually thereafter. After the first ten years, they invited their wives, widows of deceased members or female friends. This continued until 1998, their Golden Anniversary, for which they had a big shindig in the club rooms. The annual dinners continued until March 2004. At that session, the by-laws were amended to read that the First-Last Man's Club would end with the last four remaining members.
The last four remaining members on April 2, 2005: Edward Kocielowicz, age 87, who served in the U.S. Army; Chester Samborski, age 85, who served in the U.S. Army; Frank Najuch, age 81, who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps; and Paul Szczepaniec, age 80, who served in the U.S. Navy.
