Collections - An Erie Canal Town

The focus of this section of the Museum will be on Historic Sites. Stay tuned for regular additions as we continue our catologuing of the actual Museum collections.

The North Tonawanda History Museum has received word from Heritage Preservation:  The National Institute for Conservation, in Washington, D.C.  that the Museum  has been determined eligible for the 2006 Conservation Assessment Program (CAP). The Museum will be allocated $6,540 to hire a professional conservator to assess the Museum's collections and a preservation architect to assess the facilities for the future Museum home.  Assessors will meet with Museum staff and volunteers, as well as with members of the Board of Trustees, so that everyone will play a part in the CAP assessment and will be invested in carrying out the assessor's recommendations.  The Museum will need to match the grant with $610.

Heritage Preservation’s Conservation Assessment Program is supported through a cooperative agreement with the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is an independent federal grant-making agency dedicated to creating and sustaining a nation of learners by helping libraries and museums serve their communities.

Letters & Notes from Museum Visitors

From: Wendy Nikolich - Vienna, VA (formerly of North Tonawanda) - October 17, 2005

Hello

I was a visitor back in July.  I need to get a copy of the book I mentioned in the subject line.  I tried the publisher and they aren't printing it.  Can anyone help me with this?  Used would be ok if in good condition...I actually would like 2 copies if possible.

Thank you so much!

Our Historic Churches - Letters & Notes from Museum Visitors

From: Dave Fill - North Carolina - May 1, 2004

Hi Donna:

I have found MANY more articles from the old newspapers of the Tonawandas. I had packed them away when we moved to South Carolina and lo and behold....I have found them! Would you like me to send them to you? I just can't find the time to enter them into my web site and I think many people would get a kick out of those items. Just let me know (with a mailing address) I will get them out.
The NT History Museum is certainly gaining much momentum and I can't wait to visit the actual museum...keep up the good work!
Also there is an article on your site about Payne Ave Christian Church submitted by Ed Wokersien. In the article is mentions how a group of members formed a 3rd church at 1400 Ruie Road and held it's services at the Wurlitzer Plant. My parents, Matthew and Ethyl Fill, along with my sister (Noreen) and myself were one of the families that proceeded to the Wurlitzer plant on May 25, 1958 carrying the communion from the Payne Ave. Christian Church for that service. I would like to see the names (I believe there was just four) of the families involved  with that event.  I know it was  very emotional for everyone in the family. The name of the first minister alludes me but the second was Charles Hobbs a very well known individual in North Tonawanda and one who I consider a very good friend! He offered grace at my retirement party held at the Renaissance Club in January of 1999.

Editor's note:  The history of Payne Avenue Christian Church was provided to the North Tonawanda History Museum by Ed Wokersien in 2004.
