Bridge Gallery

Because the Power Building had not yet replaced the Scanlon House hotel on the North Tonawanda side of the Bascule Bridge connecting Webster Street in North Tonawanda with Main Street in Tonawanda, this photo was earlier than 1929 when the E.B. Green-designed Power Building was constructed on the site of the demolished hotel.

The bridge connecting downtown Tonawanda with the Gastown section was open to vehicular traffic in these days. Humphrey & Vandervoort Insurance was housed in the brick building on the right. Paschal Humphrey and the Vandervoorts were North Tonawanda residents. Connecting Tonawanda on the right with North Tonawanda on the left beyond the bridge to Gastown is the Delaware Bridge between Tonawanda's Delaware Street and North Tonawanda's Main Street. The Elks Club building is visible at the northern end of the Delaware Bridge.

Looking over the Bascule Bridge towards Tonawanda prior to the urban renewal demolition of much of the wonderful shopping district that once existed on the Tonawanda side. Marine Trust Company was part of the Marine Trust banks established by North Tonawanda's George Rand.
