The George Herschell Home

65 Christiana Street

65 Christiana was originally the home of the George Herschell family, Allan Herschell’s brother, with an epi from Scotland, the family “crest,” still visible on the turret roof.  Allan Herschell, who married the daughter of John Spillman, a Webster Street liquor dealer, lived here after the death of his brother.  From 1920 through 1940, Michael J. Joyce and his family lived here. An artist friend of Mary Ann Joyce’s cousin who lived with the Joyces made the drawing.  Family weddings and funerals of the Joyce family took place in the home over the years.  Mary Ann Joyce, granddaughter of Michael, named her daughter Christiana after the street on which the house is located.

65 Christiana Street was built as the home of George Herschell, Allan Herschell's brother, who joined the Herschell manufacturing enterprise in 1873.  Note the "epi" on the top of the roof at left.  From Scotland, it represents the Herschell family crest.  After George's death, Allan Herschell and his wife lived here. Photos taken in 2004.

The original grandeur can be imagined.

An artist friend of Nancy Joyce Anderson, created this drawing of the home during the residence of Michael J. Joyce (1920-1940). Nancy's cousin, Mary Ann Joyce, now a resident of Sacramento, California, kindly donated a copy of the sketch to the Museum. Michael J. Joyce was her grandfather. The house was Mary Ann's first home and several other cousins were born there. Family weddings and funerals of the Joyce family also took place in the home. Mary Ann named her daughter "Christiana" after the house at 65 Christiana Street.
