58 Christiana Street

This was the home of John Shartle, who was with the Tonawanda Board & Paper Company.  The Shartle family latler bought C. B.Thompson's home next door to Goundry School.  The school was at 236 Goundry.  Around 1909, when Farny and Grace Wurlitzer moved to North Tonawanda from Cincinnati, they occupied the upper apartment in the house, later buying the John Edwards home at 373 Goundry, now known as the Wurlitzer mansion.  Walter C. and Kate C. Benedict lived her in the 1920's when Walter was District Engineer for Empire Engineering Co.  In 1930 he was listed simply as a Civil Engineer and a son, Walter, Jr., lived with them.  The son was a student.  By 1933, they no longer lived here.  Ferdinance Jones, a landscape gardener moved to 58 Christiana from 197 Bryant Street. The house at the left of this one, 52 Christiana Street, was the home of Christiana Long Smith, for whom the street is named.
