307 Christiana Street Burt and Robert Lewis – 307 Christiana Street
Burt A. Lewis lived at 307 Christiana Street. Burt served as 5th Ward Alderman from 1939 to 1945. He had come to North Tonawanda in 1914 with American District Steam Co. which was located on Bryant Street where Taber Industries is now. Retiring in 1945, he went into real estate. Burt Lewis also served the city as police commissioner under Mayor Benjamin L. Rand. He was a member of the school board and chairman of the library board for 42 years, retiring from the latter post in 1957. He died on October 29, 1960. His son, Robert L. Lewis, was President of the Class of 1929, graduating with Anthony W. Brick, Jr. and Hugh A. McLean III. Robert Lewis worked for Northeast Piping & Construction Co., predecessor of American District Steam Co., and then spent fifteen years in drafting at Buffalo Bolt. In 1949, Robert Lewis opened Lewis Graphics at 188 Main Street, doing photo offset platemaking. During his military service from 1941 to 1945, Robert was a photographer, recording the story of World War II. |
